Imprinted at London by Christopher Barker, Printer to the Queenes most excellent Maiestie, Anno 1584. Cum priuilegio. Small folio signed in eights. ***8, B-C8, A-Z8, Aa-Zz8, Aaa-Zzz8, Aaaa-Bbbb8, Cccc6, Dddd4. Leaf 288 x 188mm. Some touching with red to title-page block. Two short tears to title-page. Some marginal chips and tears (sometimes just into text) throughout, not enumerated. Some stains and soiling. A few flaws worth specific mention: P1 and 2 damaged (Judges & Ruth); Q5 torn into text (I Samuel); also S6 and U1 in I Kings; U3 with a hole affecting a few letters; Dd5 with chip repaired affecting a few lines at the end of Esther; Ss4 & 5 damaged (or supplied), repaired; Ddd3 repaired (Judith); Eee1 torn into text. The Wisedome of Solomon with notes, manicules and underlining in an early hand. Gathering Dddd (end of Revelation) tired. Final leaf Dddd4 (explicit of Revelation and colophon) tired, soiled, repaired (with manuscripts notes on verso dated 1598). Very old full calf over boards, rebacked with old spine laid down. Gilt central lozenges, rubbed. Clasps, weakening but working. Speckled edges. An extraordinarily nice copy with its original genuine title-page which is a little tired but without any mounting, reinforcing, or extension. Bible is followed by a 1631 Sternhold & Hopkins Psalms. Provenance: The Harmsworth-Goyder copy (renowned book collectors Sir Robert Leicester Harmsworth [1870-1939], and George Armin Goyder [1908-1997]). With Goyder’s discreet ex-libris on front free endpaper. (Also bookplates of Henry Walker, Christian D. Ginsburg, Kenneth F. Miller, and noted American Bible collector Jonathan Byrd. Also ex-Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts and ex-Bernard Quaritch (London) with their old penciled collation notes on the rear pastedown. Goyder has a manuscript pencil note below his bookplate: “A Complete copy of the Bishops Version. Complete copies are scarce. This was the sole complete copy in the Harmsworth Collection (Lot 2523) issued prior to 1600 / G.a.G” Some other ownership inscriptions and pentrials.
