Overall a truly wonderful copy of an important Bible. Fine 19 th Century crushed brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf, modest gilt extra. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Provenance: John William Pease, the First Baron Wardington (1869-1950), to his son Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, Lord Wardington (1924-2005), renowned collector of Maps, Atlases and Rare Books (especially Bibles). Pease armorial bookplat e to the front pastedown with additional gilt on white ex-libris to the back pastedown, both bearing the Pease family motto “Pax et Spes” (“Peace and Hope”). This book is extraordinarily important and extremely rare, as are all Bibles in English printed before Queen Mary’s reign (1553-1558). The “Matthew’s Bible” [1537] of William Tyndale as seen through the press by John Rogers is “generally considered to b e the real primary version of our English Bible” (A.S. Herbert, 1968). John Rogers was martyred at the stake in 1555 for his work on this Bible. Herbert 75. Darlow & Moule 48. STC 2078
Please Note: This is a low-resolution photo, which shows the format, but makes reading the text nearly impossible. In reality, the text of these Bibles is large enough and clear enough to read very easily.
