A Confutation of the Pope’s Bull which was published more then two yeres agoe against Elizabeth, the most gracious Queene of England, Fraunce, and Ireland, and against the noble Realme of England… London: John Daye, 1572.
Small quarto. Black letter. *4, wants Ai, A2-4, B-Y4. Title-page restored and final leaf restored. Text block very fresh and well margined.
Full calf, gilt; marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles. All edge gilt. Binding a little scuffed and worn at extremities.
Bookplates and old dealer’s description on front pastedown. Same owner’s ink signature on verso of front free endpaper. Old dealer notes in pencil. Some other internal penciling. Some small marginal chips. Old stabstitch traces at gutter.
Bullinger, at the very center of the reform movement, was influenced by Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli and Calvin. Before Elizabeth, he was a correspondent of Henry VIII and Edward VI. The work at hand was prepared by Bullinger as Elizabeth’s reply to the Papal Bull of 1570 by Pius V which excommunicated Elizabeth and placed her realm under papal interdict.
