A fine copy of the 1616 Geneva version of the Bible, with Tomson’s revised New Testament, and Junius’ Revelation, in a striking and substantial binding. The Bible is bound with the Prayer Book (1616) and Metrical Psalms (1624). Armorial bookplate of William Daniell Watson matching the arms on each board.


THE BIBLE: That is, The Holy Scriptures contained in the Old and New Testament. Bound with: THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, with the Psalter or Psalmes of David. Collected into English Meeter, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins and others.


Early 18th C. full black polished calf gilt-lettered and blind-ruled with 2 pierced silver clasps, each heavy beveled board bearing a central silver boss, molded in a cushion-shape and extending 10mm. above the board surfaces, bearing the coat of arms and motto of Watson surmounted with a silver lion and unicorn. Larger version of the lion are repeated in the upper outer corner of each board, of the unicorn in the lower outer corner. Engraved title, A2-F4, (Praters); engraved title, 2 leaves (“To the Christian Reader… and “Of the incomparable treasure of the holy Scriptures…”) leaves 1-444b (Old Testament and Apocrypha); title (mss. Births of the Watson family 1626-1781 on verso), “the Printer to the Diligent Reader” – 1p., “The description of the Holy Lane…” (with Map) – 1p., leaves 3-135b (New Testament), pp. 114, K5-K7 (Psalms and Prayers ending with engraved tailpiece and tables). Mss. Details of births of the Watson family on flyleaf, a little browning and damping in places, a few tears neatly repaired; lacks 1 leaf bearing an engraving after the Old Testament title, otherwise complete.
