John Foxe’s Book of Martyrs - 1632/31
Acts and monuments of matters most speciall and memorable, happening in the Church, with an universall historie of the same...the seventh time newly imprinted. Printed by Adam Islip, Fœlix Kingston, and Robert Young, 1632
3 volumes, folio, engraved title-pages, volume 1 with 2 folding plates, volume 2 with double-page plate, volume 3 with 1 folding plate, numerous illustrations throughout.
First published in 1563 and more commonly known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs, the three volumes amount to 2,300 pages of over 3 million words and numerous engravings. This 1632 edition adds a chronology and a topical outline as well as a continuation of foreign martyrs.
Foxe's famed Book of Martyrs, first published in English in 1563, is perhaps the best English illustrated book of its time, and a typographic tour-de-force as well. The often somewhat gruesome woodcuts picture the persecution, torture, burning, etc. of Christian martyrs.
