A close reprinting of Froschauer’s 1531 “Baptist” Bible, or the Zurich “Combined” Bible called Kombinierte.

Contents: Hie nach volget ein kurtzer seiger… (concordance); [List of Books, and a chronology); Bibl e text of Genesis through Revelation (complete). General title supplied in facsimile; no separate New Testament title-page called for in this edition, which is signed and foliated without break from Malachi to Matthew.

Folio, almost 15” tall, signed in eights. 50 lines in full column. Collation: Preliminaries: aaa-bbb6, ccc3; Text: a-z8, A-T8, V5 (lacks [V6] a blank and aa.i flytitl e to the second part of the Old Testament), aa.ii-[viii], bb-zz8, AA-QQ8, RR5 [colophon at RR5v].

Profusely and wonderfully illustrated: Large woodcut to open Genesis; approximately 198 woodcuts (mostly 11-line, full column, with those in Revelation being 15-line, full column); plus approximately 78 woodcut historiated initials (some repeats, especially in the epistles [“Saul on the road to Damascus”]). A few woodcuts and initials with contemporary amateur tinting (the opening few in Genesis, incipit of Numbers, and last cut in Revelation).

Minor stains and damp. A few tears/repairs. Significant paper repair at dd.iii. in the Psalter. A short tear in to text of KK[6], opening of Romans. Some gutter repairs in Revelation. Other minor and inoffensive flaws. A few early ink marginal notations.

Full blind-tooled contemporary German pigskin over wooden boards, worn and with original clasp straps perished, but holding perfectly strong.
