1763 Baskerville Greek New Testament

[Title in Greek.] Novum Testamentum. Juxta Exemplar Millianum. Typis, Joannis Baskerville. Oxonii: E Typographeo Clarendoniano. MDCCLXIII. Sumptibus Academiae.

First edition. Half-title; title; 415 [416]pp. Small folio signed in twos. Text not divided into verses, but verse numbers given in the margins.

The text of this edition, printed in only 500 copies, utilizing the celebrated types of renowned Birmingham printer John Baskerville, generally reproduces that of John Mill (Darlow and Moule 4725) with seven variants. The John Mill text, the most famous Greek New Testament of the 18th Century, was the text of the 1550 Stephanus Editio Regia with a few slight variants.

Contemporary calf rebacked. Ruled and bordered in gilt. Tips renewed. All edges marbled.

Interior fine. Ownership indications on the half-title have been erased or covered with pastedowns.

DM 4755.
