GREATSITE.COM Presents ![]() Earliest Separate Greek New Testament [Bible in Greek.] ERASMUS, Desiderius. Nouum Testamentum Graece. Hagenau: Thomas Anselm, 1521.
First quarto printing of the Greek New Testament of Erasmus; first printing of that text in any format smaller than the 1516 and 1519 small folios; first separate printing of the text in any format.
Colophon: Hagenoae, in aedibus Thomae Anshelmi Badensis, Mense Martio. Anno salutis nostrae M.D.XXI. (on zz4a).
Lacks the four leaves of preliminaries; textually complete. Incipits of Gospels printed in red and black.
Even while Erasmus was still at work on his Greek NT and Latin re-translation, Nicholas Gerbelius, the editor of the edition at hand, wrote to him on 11 September 1515 to urge that the Greek should be printed separately for convenience (Tregelles, Account, p. 20). The text follows the improved 1519 Erasmus text.
Old stiff vellum with yapp edges. Joints sound, inner paper hinges split. A few gatherings standing proud where over-opened. Vellum is soiled and stained, but sound and strong and very appropriate. Manuscript spine labeling: Testment / Graecium / Hagenoae / 1521. In a custom leather-backed conservation box.
Text block quite clean and fresh, and well margined. Some old manuscript notes in early hands in Latin and Greek.
Darlow and Moule 4598.
Please Note: This is a low-resolution photo, which shows the format, but makes reading the text nearly impossible. In reality, the text of these Bibles is large enough and clear enough to read very easily.
