Ancient Bible
The "Great She" Bible
Folio Edition of the King James Bible
1613 and 1611

[Bible in English.] The/Holy/Bible,/Conteyning the Old Testa-/ment, and the New:/ Newly Translated out of/the Originall Tongues: and with/the former Translations diligently/compared and reuise d, by his/Maiesties speciall Com-/mandement./Appointed to be read in Churches./Imprinted/at London by Robert/Barker, Printer to the/King's most Excellent/Maiestie./Anno Dom. 1613.

Folio edition of the King James Bible, known as the "Great She" Bible (vide infra). Fry's "first edition, second issue, without reprints" of the King James Bible. Herbert: "Others more correctly style it the 'second folio edition, 1613, 1611,' inasmuch as it deserves to be reckoned a distinct edition." The general title is dated 1611 and the New Testament title is dated 1613. Probably the greater part of this issue was, in fact, printed in 1611 though delayed.

The main distinguishing point sought by dealers and collectors is at Ruth 3:15 where, in the first issue Ruth is referred to as "he" (the "Great He" Bible) and in the second issue (copy at hand) Ruth is correctly referred to as "she."

Collates per Herbert 319. General title-page heavily chipped, repaired, about ¼ lost. Does contain the sometimes inserted Genealogies; not the map.

Some inevitable spotting, staining, small tears/repairs. Some leaves unusually stained: e.g., Ll3-6; Mmm2, and in the NT especially R4 & 5. Overall quite nice though (with these exceptions).  Book retains a slight chemical odor, perhaps from a modern attempt to wash or bleach the above-mentioned stains. Repairs and tiredness from Hebrews to the end; last leaf in facsimile.

Full dark calf by Starr Bookworks of Arizona, ruled and decorated in blind, red spine labels, using date of 1611.

Herbert, A.S., Historical Catalogue of Printed Editions of the English Bible, 1525-1961 (1968) number 319. Darlow and Moule #246. STC # 2224.

Please Note:  This is a low-resolution photo, which shows the format, but makes reading the text nearly impossible.  In reality, the text of these Bibles is large enough and clear enough to read very easily.
