1640 First Geneva Bible without the Apocrypha In the List of Books
[Bible in English] The Bible: That is, The Holy Scriptvres contained… Amsterdam: Printed by Thomas Stafford, 1640.
A Geneva-Tomson-Junius text, “according to the Copy Printed at Edinburgh by Andro Hart, in the year 1610” (general title-page).
Ideal collation: [pilcrow]4 A-Z6 Aa-Qq6 A-Z4 Aa-Pp4 Qq6 [pilcrow]2 [pilcrow]2 A-Z4 Aa-Mm4. 540 ff.
Some expected staining (especially intermittent damp) and soiling, H1-3 A1-4 have marginal repair but are generally pleasantly clean and fresh. Lovely New Testament title. Very nicely margined.
“The Apocryphal books, with the exception of the Prayer of Manasses, are omitted for reasons specified in a note inserted after Malachi. This seems to be the earliest example of an English Bible which deliberately omits the Apocrypha from the list of books” (– Herbert, p. 180).
